Prescription charges

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

NHS Prescription costs as of 1st April 2023

  • The current prescription charge is £9.65.
  • From 1st April 2023 a three monthly PPC is £31.25. This saves you money if you need four or more items in three months.
  • A 12 month certificate is £111.60 and .PPCs offer savings for those needing four or more items in three months, or 12 or more items in a year.

PPCs are available by 10 monthly direct debit instalment payments. The prescription prepayment certificates allow anyone to obtain all the prescriptions they need for £2 per week.

The recently announced HRT PPC will cost £19.30 (the cost of two prescription charges). Please note that whilst the HRT PPC was originally announced as costing £18.70, this has increased to reflect the rise in the prescription charge. This PPC can only be used when a patient is prescribed a listed HRT medicine.

There is further information about prescription exemptions, fees and PPCs available on the NHS website.
